July Makeup Favorites

Can you believe July is over? So many great things happened this month including my 22nd birthday, getting my driver’s license and discovering amazing new products that have quickly become favorites. So, without rambling on, here are my July makeup favorites (with the exception of one non-makeup product).

July Makeup Favorites

  1. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in Devotion

There’s something about having a lip color that is easy to apply, matches with everything and is affordable and this one does the trick. The color is the perfect everyday pink without  being nude or too bright. It has a creamy texture which is quite different from other matte lip colors that I’ve come across which makes it feel more comfortable on the lips, however, it is not long-lasting.  I tend to have dry lips and applying lip colors can be such a pain when most of them tend to highlight your patchy skin but I’ve found that this applied smoothly and effortlessly. Definitely going to be checking out their extensive color range.

2. L’Occitane Neroli & Orchidee Fragrance

I don’t include fragrance favorites very often since I tend to stick to my few signature scents but when I came across this perfume I fell in love and knew I had to share it. The scent includes notes of orange, mandarin, white orchid and a soft base of musk and iris. It is a mixture of both a fresh yet still floral scent that is light yet also quite heavy.  I know that this isn’t exactly the best description but oh my it smells incredible and one spray lingers on all day.

3.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer in Chocolate

I am so happy I came across this brow pencil as it has truly changed the brow game for me. I don’t want to talk too much about this product just because I’ll be talking more about it in another post but the slanted tip gives just the right precision to achieve bold brows. The texture is creamy and easy-to-blend making it much easier to achieve natural looking brows.

4.  HourGlass Ambient Lighting Powder in Luminous Light

By far the most beautiful finishing powders I have come across (and the most expensive..). I dust this all over my face and specifically on my T-zone area to get the most gorgeous glow. It is not a highlighter but rather a face powder that illuminates and brightens by adding the most subtle and healthy-looking glow to your face. From the site, “By manipulating and filtering out harsh light, powders conceal skin imperfections, pores and wrinkles. State-of-the-art formula delivers a multidimensional luminescence to every skin tone, making it appear softer, younger and perfectly lit”.

5.   Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Mother

When they say that it’s everlasting they mean its EVER LASTING! This stuff does not come off or transfer or fade anywhere. The formula dries down to a fully matte look and feels comfortable on the lips while being a tad drying. It is smooth and creamy and quite easy to apply, however, I would recommend using a good lipliner underneath to get the full effect. It is extremely pigmented and the color range is to die for with  every shade being available (including navy blue). This shade in specific, Mother, is such a special color in my opinion and can be described as a dusty pink. It’s also just the right amount of bright without being too out there and can still be worn as an everyday lip color.

6.  Nars Bronzing Powder in Laguna

I know, I know, this product has been talked about sooo much you’re probably sick of hearing about it. So let me just quickly say this. This bronzer is a must-have for pretty much everyone. It can be used to contour or bronze up your face since it has subtle golden shimmers to add warmth. The Nars bronzer has such a smooth texture which makes application and the buildability so easy. If you haven’t checked out my last blog post here, make sure to do so as I talked more about my love for this bronzer!

7.   Collection Lasting perfection Concealer in Warm Medium

After hearing bloggers raving about how incredible this very affordable concealer is, I had to try it out and they are so right. This Collection concealer stays on for a very long time, it is so pigmented and conceals any dark circles and it is so easy to blend. It has a thin consistency that still adds heavy coverage without looking cakey or creasing. The color selection is limited, especially for the darker skin tones which is unfortunate but if you happen to find the right shade,  go for it!

8.    NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague

I’ve spoken about the NYX soft matte lip creams so many times on my blog because they’re just so damn good (let me know if you’d like to see a collection post with swatches?). This one new shade in particular called Prague has become my favorite for Summer.  It can be described as a grape wine color that looks stunning on the lips. The formula is so creamy and soft and perfect for everyday.

9. NYX Slide On Eye Liner in Brown Perfection

I was looking for a good dark brown eyeliner that I can use in my waterline and tightline and that will stay on without smearing everywhere. This eyeliner does not budge! It is pigmented and has a soft formula that easily glides on your waterline. It stays on for a significant amount of time and for the affordable price tag you really can’t go wrong.

3 Tips to Help You Contour and Highlight Like a Pro

You might feel like running in the opposite direction when you hear the phrase “contour and highlight”, but I assure you it’s easier than you think. I want to share with you 3 tips to help you contour and highlight like a pro that will hopefully have you feeling more like JLo and less like a muddy disco ball.

  1. The Face Shape

The standard structure that many people tend to focus on is the 3E shape which is a good reference point. However, if you want to take things to the next level, it is important to take a look at your face shape.  Circle? Contour along the sides of your face to help give you a more structured jawline. Square? Contour on the jawbone and below the cheeks to narrow this area. etc.

There are plenty of resources online that can help you figure out what face shape you are. Understanding your shape will allow you to understand what you want to minimize (contour) and what you’d want to bring out (highlight). For example, if you have a wider forehead, you’d contour the top to make it appear smaller. If your jawbone is wide, you might want to contour the sides to make it appear narrower. In contrast, highlighting helps bring out your features which is why it is typically used on the cupid’s bow, the tip of the nose, the brow bone as well as the cheekbones.

2.  The Products

You’ve probably come across many different types of formulas and products used for contouring and highlighting. It really does depend on your preference. You can use different shades of concealers, sticks, powders, creams and even gel formulas.

Two cult products that I’ve been loving and recommend to everyone is the Nars Bronzer Powder in Laguna and the TheBalm MaryLou-manizer. Ideally, contouring should be done with a cool-toned bronzer and warmed up with a warm-toned bronzer on top. For me, the Nars Laguna bronzer acts as both since it has a very subtle golden shimmer which adds warmth but is also a versatile shade that is good for contouring. This bronzer blends beautifully on the skin and does not make your face look muddy or dirty.

The MaryLou-manizer highlighter is the first product that I’ve purchased from TheBalm and it has quickly become a favorite. It has a golden shimmer that enhances pretty much all skin tones. The pigmentation and longevity of this product is impeccable and it’s also easy to blend, making it very user-friendly. Try to steer away from highlighters that have huge specks of glitter as this will sit right on top of your cheeks and enhance your pores, no no no.

3.  The Tools

Fingers, sponge or brush? This part is completely dependent on your preference, however, sponges and fingers work best with creamy products as it allows you to warm up the product and apply it more naturally on the face. If you opt for a brush with cream products, make sure the brush has synthetic hair (like a concealer brush). Powder bronzers and highlighters work best with brushes.

My personal favorite for contouring is the Nars Ita Kabuki Brush (here). For an all over the face bronzing brush I absolutely love the Real Techniques Blush Brush. As for highlighting, I tend to use a fan brush that I  received in a brush kit as I’ve found that these brushes allow you to control the amount of product placed on your cheeks and they give you a very natural finish. Essie Nailpolish Duo - Mint Candy Apple & Gel Setter Top Coat Essie Nailpolish Duo - Mint Candy Apple & Gel Setter Top Coat Essie Nailpolish Duo - Mint Candy Apple & Gel Setter Top Coat

I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy anymore nailpolishes due to the excessive amount that I’ve collected over the years, however, when I came across this Essie nail duo with Mint Candy Apple and the Gel Setter Top Coat I had to make an exception.

I already owned Mint Candy Apple, a cult favorite, from a few years back and used it to death and never ended up replacing it.  When I compared the old bottle with the new one at home, I noticed that the two Essie Mint Candy Apples had different colors. The old Mint Candy Apple had more of a baby blue color and the new one looked more like a pastel green. I ended up tweeting Essie and was told that after time they tend to change color ( although I have also read that they have been reformulated..).  I absolutely love this color for summer as it looks so nice with a tan and pretty much on any skin tone. The formula is lovely and glides on smoothly without being streaky at all (which has been an issue with some Essie colors). I’m not one to usually go for blue and green nail polish on my nails, however, this cult favorite is definitely one of my top five all-time favorite colors.

My weak and brittle nails push me to keep trying new base and top coats and I was happily impressed with Essie’s Gel Setter Top Coat. This top coat gave me incredible shine that actually lasted more than two days. It dries quickly (which is always a must for me) and increases the longevity of Essie nail polishes on the nails. I did notice that it seemed to last longer when I paired it with an Essie nail polish rather than another nail polish brand but I’m not too sure if that was due to coincidence or simply because it works better with its own kind. I also found it to be quite durable as it didn’t have any bed sheet marks the next morning or scratches and it didn’t peel at all, which is what usually happens. This is definitely a product I would repurchase.

Kylie Lip Kits Review & Swatches

I know, I know, you’ve already heard, seen and read a million and one posts and videos of the Kylie Lip Kits review and swatches, but I thought why not add my little piece into the blogosphere incase any of you would like to read more about it. I’m going to keep this post short and sweet, so here we go…

First off, the packaging of the Kylie lip kits is on point. It comes in a black and white box with an image of dripping lips on the front as well as a little card with a message from Kylie, very creative.  The black box arrived with the two Kylie Lip Kits, each containing the matte liquid lipstick as well as their corresponding lipliner.

The formula is fast-drying and feels velvety on the lips. It takes around 15 seconds to fully set and become a matte lip. It stays on your lips until you decide to take it off, however, after some time it  slowly starts to fade around the center of the lips. Due to the nature of liquid lipsticks and the fact that its matte, it does leave your lips feeling dry by the end of the day so make sure to moisturize with a lip balm. Although it can make your lips feel drying, it does sit comfortably on the lips throughout the day and feels lightweight rather than thick and gloopy.

Kylie Lip Kits Review & SwatchesKylie Lip Kits Review & SwatchesThe biggest and most important tip I can share with you is do not layer these. Apply one smooth layer of the liquid lipstick and wait for it to dry. Don’t go over it as this will make the lipstick thick and it will eventually start peeling off your lips (tried and tested..) not a good look. The colors are extremely opaque and pigmented and one swipe is all you need for a full application.

L: Posie K lipliner & liquid lipstick

R: Dolce K lipliner & liquid lipstick

After much deliberation, I decided to get Posie K, a dusty mauve and Dolce K, a cool brown. The lipliners are incredibly close to the liquid lipstick in terms of color and apply so smoothly and easily to the lips without tugging and pushing. Dolce K, color wise, was an issue for me as I felt it had grey and blue undertones which sometimes, with my skin color, washed me out and made me look cold. I make sure to pair it with a very warm bronzer to keep my skin looking healthy. PosieK, on the other hand, has fast become a favorite, go-to color. It seems to compliment almost all skin tones and can be flattering with a simple eye look or a heavy smokey one.

Have you tried the Kylie lip kits? Which colors did you go for?

New Spring Drugstore Makeup  A few weeks ago I went into Boots and picked up new spring drugstore makeup products that I really wanted to try out. Funnily enough, it was only when I got home that I noticed that my purchases were dominated by only two brands, Rimmel and L’Oreal. I love Rimmel for its high quality products and affordability and L’Oreal for its constantly unique and innovative products. So, here are a couple of new spring makeup products that I picked from the drugstore. Make sure to leave a comment telling me what new products you’ve tried and if you’d like a more in-depth review on any of the products mentioned.

1. L’Oreal Infallible Matte Max (002 Like a Virgin)

I was intrigued by the fact that the actual color pigment is on the cap of the pen and the applicator is a sponge tip that you basically “dip in” to the color. The results give you a smooth matte tint of color to your lips and more precision to dab it exactly where you want. For example, you can put a nude lipstick all over your lips and then dab a bit of the pink at the very center. It has quite a unique texture that transforms from gel to powder on the lips. The lipstick feels very lightweight on the lips and it even contains micro-oils to help keep your lips hydrated. I think those who want something quick and easy to use would really love these new releases.

2. Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation (102 Light Nude)

I had read so many bloggers raving about Rimmel’s new foundation that I just had to try it. First of all, the color selection is awesome with 14 shades to suit everyone’s skin tone. I surprisingly picked up a light shade because my skin had not seen the sun (London weather…) at the time of purchase and so it was suitable for my winter skin. The formula is lightweight and feels quite smooth in texture, making it blendable and buildable. The foundation is meant to provide 24-hour moisture to the skin, leaving the skin feeling and looking healthier and more radiant.

3. Rimmel Good to Glow Cream Highlighter (Soho Glow)

I always thought there was a lack of good cream highlighters in the drugstore but Rimmel’s cream highlighter definitely proved me wrong. With three different shades to choose from: white/pearl, peach and gold, I opted for Soho Glow which is the warm gold shade. This highlighter applied smoothly to the skin and leaves a sheen finish that doesn’t look glittery and a little goes a long way. I suggest applying a powder highlighter on top to increase its longevity. The formula feels quite light and slightly more liquidy but it still adds such a warm radiant glow to the skin, especially for tanned and dark skin.

4. Rimmel Match perfection Concealer (040 Soft Beige)

To be completely honest, this product isn’t a new release at all. It was an old favorite of mine that I thought I’d pick up again and include in this haul. What I loved about this concealer is the fact that it acts as both a concealer as well as a highlighter/illuminator which gives the perfect amount of brightness to under-eye circles. The tip has a brush applicator which makes it very easy to apply the product to the skin. The product itself blends well and has a light coverage and so if you apply more layers (for a heavier coverage), it may crease. The best way to prevent that is to set the concealer with a translucent powder.

5.  L’Oreal False Lash Sculpt Mascara

The new L’Oreal mascara is meant to sculpt your lashes, lengthening them from the very roots. The brush has a very unique shape with close plastic bristles that are meant to comb the lashes. I found that this mascara definitely makes the lashes super black and appear fuller by defining each lash and fanning them out. If you’re looking for a good lengthening mascara, I definitely recommend checking this one out.

6. L’Oreal Infallible Sculpt Contouring Base (Medium-Dark)

Another new and innovative product on the market is this sculpt contouring base from L’Oreal. With only two shades offered (Light-Medium & Medium-Dark), this foundation is designed to “use before contouring, for a flawlessly sculpted look”. The foundation provides a light coverage and contains Smart Pigments that match you skin color. The technicality behind it has been explained on L’Oreal’s website as a foundation that is half as thin to prevent the caking effect and with grip technology that the base fuses with the contour to increase longevity. I personally liked this foundation due to its light coverage and the way it made my skin look healthy and radiant. When I applied bronzer and highlighter over it, I definitely felt like it clung on to the base and stayed on for longer without making me feel like I have makeup stuck on my face. The only downside is the very limited color selection as the light-medium appeared to be too light and the medium-dark was slightly darker on my skin.
